Wednesday Crafternoons

It’s Wednesday. Let’s Get Glowing!

Creepy Pair of Underwear book

Who needs a night light when you have underwear that glows? 😜

Fireworks. Lightning Bugs. Jellyfish. Stars.

Things that are pretty.

*EHHNT*

Things that sting.

*EHHNT*

Things that glow!

*Ding Ding Ding*

We HAVE a winner!

A while back, we explored salt painting.

We may have gotten too salty.

This time, we're going to paint with something completely opposite.

Something spectacular.

Something that has NO. SOLID. FORM.

No, not a ghost 👻, though that would be quite the experience.

A "light" painting would probably be less scary.

That's right. Our project involves what sounds impossible, painting with LIGHT.

First, find a partner to give you a hand.

Now, grab your smartphone and let's get glowin'.

Step 1

Step 1

Choose A "Paintbrush."

We used multicolored glow sticks.

Any small, portable object that emits light works.

Some other options are a headlamp, a light stick, a fake candle or even another phone's flashlight.

Step 2

Step 2

Download The App.

Painting with light involves a slow shutter speed.

Instead of fiddling around with your phone's settings, try installing one of these two FREE apps.

VSCO or Long Exposure Camera 2 by AAAS Dream.

Step 3

Step 3

Set up your camera.

Have your phone open to the app.

Set it to Light Tracing and 10 second pictures.

Ask a partner to hold it steady.

Step 4

Step 4

Turn Off The Lights!

Make the room as dark as you can.

Any light coming from elsewhere (ex: street lamps, windows, car lights, etc.) will also be captured and make the painting less vivid.

Step 5

Step 5

Paint A Design!

Use your "paintbrush" to draw a design in the air.

Try something simple at first like a heart.

The cameraperson will hit "Light Trace" (Long Exposure 2 App) to capture the movement.

SO LIT!

SO LIT!

And that's it! The slow-shutter movement will save itself as one "long" picture.

It's also a fun way to practice the alphabet.

Write out a fun message!

Remember, art comes in all shades of the sun.

Some artists even go as far as using unconventional materials like gum and cassette tape to build unique pieces.

Check out My Modern Met if you're intrigued.

Or take a socially-distanced tour of The Allure of Matter exhibit at the Smart Museum.

There's some morbid but FASCINATING stuff over there.

See this tent? It’s made out of HUMAN HAIR… 🤢 😲 It uses DNA to represent the U.S. for the melting pot that it is, a nation of immigrants. (united nations: american code, 1995–2019 by Gu Wenda)

We don't suggest using human hair, but there are so many cool things in the world.

What else can you find to experiment with? Get creative!

But not too creative.

Don't forget to snap a couple of photos, tag them #DPCrafternoons and share with us on Facebook and Instagram.

As always, see you next week!
