Part-time Youth Services Assistant (20 hours)

The Des Plaines Public Library is looking for an energetic Youth Services Assistant practiced in public service to work in a busy, dynamic, and diverse environment. Primary duties include: staffing the Youth Services public desk to provide reference and readers’ advisory services, assisting patrons with participation in our many programs and activities, managing some areas of the collection, participating in our Summer Reading Challenge committees, attending monthly department and library meetings, and planning and executing or hosting programs.

 

Spanish and/or Polish language skills are definitely a plus, but please be sure to indicate any additional languages. The local school district reports over 60 different languages are spoken in our community’s homes.

Youth Services Assistant Manager

This is a new position in the Des Plaines Public Library Youth Services department.

The successful candidate will be the Assistant Manager to the Youth Services Department Head and serve as the department’s operations manager, overseeing staff schedules and managing the department’s part-time staff, the Youth Services information desk, and specific areas of the Youth Services collection of materials. The Assistant Manager will also work directly with the Department Head in preparing the department’s budgets and strategic goals.

In this position you will:

  • exhibit experience in management/supervision of staff and oversight of department services
  • promote library collections and services
  • provide leadership, training, and guidance to department and library staff
  • work collaboratively and effectively as part of the department and library teams
  • apply your strong technology skills to move the department and library forward
  • participate in reference, readers’ advisory, programming, and library-wide events
  • embrace the library’s values: generosity, good design/beauty, friendliness, efficiency

Part-time Security Monitor

Helps maintain a safe and secure environment at the Des Plaines Public Library for customers and staff; addresses disruptive or offensive behavior and minimizes theft of Library materials. Patrols building at regular intervals and appropriately handles observed irregularities or problems. Monitors security video footage. Uses non-violent crisis intervention techniques to diplomatically confront people using disruptive, offensive or inappropriate behavior; evicts from property as necessary. Ensures a positive customer experience by greeting customers, answering directional questions and participating in organization-wide initiatives.

Must be willing and able to respond to all types of building emergencies and service maintenance requests, including those in public restrooms. Must be able to set up meeting rooms with tables and chairs, lift and transport various types of material and boxes.
