The title of this job really should be “Celebrity to the under-5 Set”
…because although the job description says your title would be School Liaison Librarian, this particular librarian will be coordinator of all things Preschool Outreach and Early Literacy. The successful candidate will serve as the library’s preschool liaison to our local school districts, daycares, and many area private and parochial preschools. Expect that kids from all over the city will want to see you when they visit the library. Children will run up to you at the store, point and say, “I know you! Weren’t you in Farm Animals?”
In this position you will:
- Provide outreach services and promote library collections and services to local schools, daycares, parents, caregivers, and community agencies
- Develop new and enhance existing relationships with schools and other community groups
- Provide leadership, training, and guidance to department and library staff
- Work collaboratively and effectively as part of the department and library teams
- Supervise our established Preschool Outreach Internship programs, including six interns/year.
- Offer strong technology skills and use those to move the department and library forward
- Participate in reference, readers’ advisory, programming, and library-wide events
- Embrace the library’s values: generosity, good design/beauty, friendliness, efficiency
This internship has proven to be a great start for those interested in LIS, Early Childhood, or other related fields. As part of a two-person team, you will experience working with preschool-age children, performing storytimes, and playing a pivotal role in our library’s outreach team. The successful candidate will perform exciting storytimes for children ages 2-5 at their preschools, and encourage the children to visit the library. The Marketing & Communications Services department of the Des Plaines Public Library is seeking a part time Graphic Designer to produce highly creative work from concept to completion to effectively convey library information and brand.
The ideal candidate has exceptional artistic ability, strong graphic design skill using Adobe Cloud and other industry standard design tools, considerable knowledge of commercial and popular trends and ability create for audiences of all ages. They also need a demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize projects under a tight schedule, and communicate productively as part of a team.
This position reports directly to the Head of Marketing and Communications Services and is part of a creative services team that also includes a Creative Services Coordinator, a Digital Designer and a Production Clerk.
Key responsibilities include designing a wide ranges of print and digital materials according to established graphic and branding guidelines. The graphic designer may also assist in designing and installing library displays and other special projects. Excellent customer service and communication required.

The Des Plaines Public Library is looking for an energetic Youth Services Assistant practiced in public service to work in a busy, dynamic, and diverse environment. Primary duties include: staffing the Youth Services public desk to provide reference and readers’ advisory services, assisting patrons with participation in our many programs and activities, managing some areas of the collection, participating in our Summer Reading Challenge committees, attending monthly department and library meetings, and planning and executing or hosting programs.
Spanish and/or Polish language skills are definitely a plus, but please be sure to indicate any additional languages. The local school district reports over 60 different languages are spoken in our community’s homes.
The Des Plaines Public Library is looking for an experienced and collaborative tech specialist to manage the library’s web presence, including using Sharepoint to create a new library intranet. You will maintain and expand DPPL’s website, mobile app, and other public-facing, web-based software using a variety of CMS and web development tools. You will also monitor, troubleshoot, analyze, and interpret web traffic to ensure a user experience aligned with the library’s strategic goals. Excellent written and spoken communication skills are essential.
