The U. S. Census - Tell Me More

Why is the 2020 Census a big deal?

Well, for one thing it dates back more than 200 years. 

The first U. S. Census was organized by Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson.

Both he and President Washington worried that the population was undercounted at less than four million souls (Native Americans were not included). And after spending more than $40,000 on it!

The President blamed (in part), "The fears of others that it was intended as the foundation of a tax.”

Des Plaines Public Library is here to help. Stop by one the library 's Census Response Stations located on the 2nd and 4th floors.  A librarian can answer your questions and assist you in submitting your census online beginning March 12th.

Every 10 years, the census records everyone living in this country. It’s written in the Constitution.

DPPL Celebrates Black History Month

February is Black History Month and throughout the month we have celebrated at the library with events and displays to honor the contributions of African Americans, past and present.

A little history.....

Black History Month is an annual observance in February, celebrating the past and present achievements of African Americans.

In 1915, Dr. Carter G. Woodson—historian, teacher, and author—founded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH).

Shakespeare at the Library

On January 15, 2020, The Shakespeare Project of Chicago will present a theatrical reading of Richard III at the Des Plaines Public Library. 

Register here to attend the performance.  

Written by William Shakespeare around 1593, this historical play depicts the rise to power and short reign of King Richard III.
