Pajama-clad babies turning book pages melt my heart.

"Peekaboo, puppy...I see you!"

These words, etched in my memory years ago from countless readings of my kid’s favorite lift-the-flap board book, echo in my mind a lot lately.

Until recently, Peekaboo Puppy was the closest thing to a real puppy in our lives.

I had accepted my title of The Crusher of Dog Dreams.

Then, the pandemic crushed my dogged retention to a dogless life, and I joined the other 30% of Americans who now have one more canine than they did at the start of 2020.

As I play with said puppy, phrases from the book pop in my mind...I enjoy the sweet memory of the weight of my human baby on my lap, his hair tickling my cheek as I help his tiny fingers eagerly searching for the puppy under each flap.

Peekaboo puppy! I had heard that parents of teens should get a dog so that someone is happy to see you when you get home. That’s true. An unexpected bonus: The dog DOES WHAT I SAY. I know the point of having children is not to control them, but I have to admit it is exceptionally satisfying to get my dog to sit whenever I ask.

At the time, of course, one more round of Peekaboo Puppy could be enough to incite high blood pressure, a sigh, and an internal scream: I craved novelty.

That’s where libraries are awesome.

Fresh, new content - all for free.

But, in the midst of a pandemic, it can be hard to even know what board books to put on hold. It’s so much easier to browse through the shelves and see what catches your eye.

So while you aren’t able to browse the shelves, we will browse for you!

We’re putting a handful of new-to-you board books into a sturdy “Bag o’Board Books” that you can grab and go.

Here's how it works:

  1.  Request a Bag o’Board Books when you stop by the Carryout Desk (or call ahead - our Youth Services Desk is always happy to help! 847-376-2839).
