How Does the Library Rock?

Music is everywhere at the library. It's in the air, on our shelves and occasionally live in the plaza. Let's spotlight the ways the library can bring music to your life.

Performance: Two musical events highlight our summer music offerings.

July 11: The 5th Annual Battle of the Bands features six awesome teen bands: American Nightmare, Captain Scurvy and the Scumdog Milllionaire$, Good Enough, the Moondogs, Shinehammer, and Silent Preacher. The winning band will take home a cash prize, advance to the regional competitions and will be invited back to perform at our Party on the Plaza. Bands that have performed each year have been incredible. In fact our 2012 winner Storm the Front went on to win the Illinois State Battle of the Bands.

August 22nd: The Party on the Plaza is our end-of-summer celebration. It will begin with a family musical performance at 5pm. The winner of the Teen Battle of the Bands will play at 6:30 and Beatolution, a Genuine Tribute to the Beatles will headline at 7:30/

Downloadable Music: Des Plaines Public Library cardholders can download 5 songs a week for free through Freegal. Freegal has close to 7 million songs including the entire Sony Music catalog. The MP3 songs are yours to keep and do not ever have to be returned. And even more options for downloadable music are in the pipeline.

CDs and DVDs: The library has more than 15,000 music CDs that you can take home, everything from Baroque to Black Sabbath. Our newly reorganized CD section has the latest country, jazz, rock, soundtracks and classical music. If it's on the charts then we have it. There's even a quick pick section of the hottest new music right on the first floor. Here are some of this week's most popular CDs:
