Wednesday Crafternoons

It’s Wednesday. Let’s Make Something Fun!

The building is closed but the library is open.

Every Wednesday Crafternoon, the 2nd floor crew will share a fun, easy craft families can do from home.

Any kiddos here ever tempted by the mystery prizes in those toy vending machines?

Well, forget scrounging around for quarters.

This week, we'll be making our very own bouncy balls!

Let's try the classic rubber band ball today.

All you really need is a small circular object for your core.

And LOTS AND LOTS OF RUBBER BANDS of various sizes.

We chose to use some balled-up aluminum foil and a plethora of hair ties and rubber bands.

Step 1

Step 1

Find or make a core twice as big as your smallest rubber band.

Less slack means fewer rubber bands likely to slip off.

Step 2

Step 2

Place rubber bands in opposite directions.

This will help the bands grip each other better and just even things out.

Step 3

Step 3

Continue adding rubber bands.

Whether you stop here or not, there should be a solid layer covering your entire core.

Step 4

Step 4 (Optional)

Mix it up!

We also added a layer of hair bands. However, if you want a ball with a stronger bounce, stick to rubber bands.

Step 5

Step 5

Keep Going!

Either to your heart's content or until you run out of rubber bands, whichever comes first.

TA-DA!

This one ended up being 4 inches big. How did yours turn out?

If you're willing to get messier, try this version using glue, borax, and cornstarch.

Or if you rather, here's a video tutorial

Remember, like with all crafts, improvise as needed and don't forget to have fun!

We'd love to see what you've made!

Snap a couple of photos, tag them #DPCrafternoons and share with us on Facebook and Instagram.

See you next week!
