Happening at the library

YS Welcomes a New Family Member

The Youth Services Department is so excited to share some big news that we have been tirelessly working on all winter long. We're sure you've seen us running around the department, measuring, and talking excitedly about the renovation project that has been ongoing since last spring when the Storytime Room was expanded. Through programs and conversations at the desk, we've gotten to be close with families that frequent our department. Because of that, we wanted to be the ones to break the news to you, our dear library family, ourselves.

As part of the renovation project, we are making some changes to our Poet Tree area.  No longer will the area just house our tree and poetry books, but the newest member of Youth Services . . . . .our library pony.

That is right!  As part of our early literacy expansion project on the second floor, we thought that the best way to help kids in their emotional, physical, and social development was to add another pet to the Des Plaines Public Library family.  We are renaming that area the Pony Tree Corner, since that will be the location where the public can view our Shetland Pony. Lakeshore Farms dropped her off last night and the whole Youth Services staff is in love with her already.

She will be available to the public starting today, from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m., with feeding times at noon and 5 p.m.  Kids are welcome to pet her and maybe she can give rides at our Party on the Plaza in August. Where will she be after 6 p.m.? She'll be relaxing in the Youth Services Office. We (Stephanie and Cheryl) have agreed to give up our desks so that our newest staff member will have a place all her own. She will need to be walked a lot, so expect to see us taking turns walking in the neighborhood. Not only will she get exercise but staff will as well!

But, what do we call her?? We need YOUR help in giving her a great name!

Since we heard the news that the Pony Tree Corner was officially happening, we've been brainstorming names. Here are our top choices that members of Youth Services came up with:

  • Elsa
  • Macaroni
  • Harriet
  • Rainbow Dash

Please vote for one of the final four names in the comment section below.  Or, if you are feeling really inspired, tell the librarians at the Youth Services Desk. Voting will close on Sunday, April 5th, at 5:00 p.m. The winning name will be announced on Monday April 6th!

We hope that you liked our April Fools' joke!  To keep the silliness going, check out some titles featuring practical jokes!
