What’s Up with Oakton?

Today, we're pleased to welcome guest blogger Michelle Brown, director of student recruitment and outreach at Oakton Community College:

Whether you’ve lived here your whole life or moved to the area yesterday, you may be wondering just what Oakton Community College has to offer. The answer: more than you might think – including a whopping 80 associate degree and career certificate programs. With campuses in both Skokie and Des Plaines, Oakton enrolls over 10,000 students representing 50-plus countries and speaking 35 languages. Talk about diversity!

You can stop by the Des Plaines Public Library the third Wednesday of each month from 4 – 6 p.m. to meet with a representative and find out more about the courses, events, and programs at Oakton, but here’s a snapshot of that amazing college in your own backyard:

Credit Programs:

While most are aware of our two-year associate’s degrees, the College also has dozens of certificate programs  – from basic nursing assistant training to technical communications – that can be completed in a few months. At Oakton, options abound!

Continuing Education:

Ever wish you knew how to make sushi or ballroom dance? Ready to brush up on some computer skills? Continuing Education at Oakton has something for everyone!

STEM Mentoring Program:

Oakton’s STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Mentoring Program offers students an opportunity to get research experience early on in their academic career, and, once they complete the program, become eligible for special articulation and scholarship opportunities at four-year universities.

Exceptional New Resources:

We couldn’t be more excited about our new state-of-the-art 93,000 square-foot Science and Health Career Center! Opening January 2015, the Center will transform the way students learn, providing hands-on opportunities with cutting-edge technologies.

The Arts:

Why go to the big city when you’ve got everything here?  The Koehnline Museum of Art, Performing Arts Center, Chicago Writers Series, and Oakton’s Music Department create a rich, creative environment for Campus and community alike.
