Books+Technology=Living In Harmony?

Technology has become a fundamental part of our world, especially in libraries across the country. We are always looking for new ways to implement it in our daily lives and amp it up to make it even more useful and available. Some simply do not feel that technology and books can ever live together in perfect harmony.

Ever heard that saying that you can’t have your cake and eat it too? Well, that saying is about to be thrown under the bus.

Technology pairs swimmingly with books, and I have proof.

Starting later this month, 4th-6th graders are invited to join us in Youth Services for a new program that will meet once a month from 5:00-6:30 p.m called Book Club with a Bang where we will combine amazing books with different forms of technology.

After taking some time to discuss the book of the month, we will then dive into creating podcasts and book trailers about the book. We will recreate scenes using Legos, experiment with a new app called Aurasma, use a green screen, create our own comics, and even participate in some Reader’s Theater.

There are many ways you can combine books and technology right in your own home! Simply pick a book that is interesting and one that you think will make for great conversation with friends or even with your family.

Then, check out some books from the library about technology (like the ones listed below) and find ways to use it with your book discussions.

When you pair books with technology, something magical begins to happen. Stories leap off the pages and characters suddenly spring to life! Messages and meaning embedded in stories become even clearer and ideas begin to take flight.

Books are already magical places to get lost, so why not utilize all the technology available to amplify the experience?
