Happening at the library
Free Comic Books on May 2nd!
Free Comic Book Day is an annual tradition. Local comic book stores let patrons choose from several special books for anyone looking to explore the world of comics. There are selections from both Marvel and DC, as well as many independent publishers. This year, we’ll also be celebrating at Des Plaines Public Library!
Children through 8th grade can get one free comic book per child on the 2nd floor at the librarians’ desk. Teens and adults of all ages can get their one free comic book from the 3rd floor at the desk, as well.
Comic books can sometimes be intimidating to new readers. Popular characters like Batman or Spider-man have hundreds of issues. Writers and artists join and leave a title throughout the decades of publication. Free Comic Book Day, however, intends to provide an annual, easy starting point for newcomers to the medium. Often, exciting new stories will begin the same time as Free Comic Book Day, too.
After selecting your free comic book, you are encouraged to browse DPPL’s wide selection of comics and graphic novels. The 2nd floor holds comics in its Young Adult section, while the 3rd floor’s collection faces the Teen Lounge. Our most comic-literate staffers will be on hand May 2nd to answer any questions you have and make recommendations for first-timers as well as true believers!
The comic books are provided by local shops Pastimes in Niles and Comix Revolution in Mount Prospect. If you like your free book, be sure to check out the amazing world of comics at either store!
